The OAS Avalanche Awareness course provides an introduction to the hazards of traveling in or near avalanche terrain for mountain occupational workers. This introductory​ ​course is limited to basic concepts but emphasizes managing​ risk for mountain occupational workers​ by​ understanding and ​avoiding exposure​ ​to avalanche ​terrain.

OAS Avalanche Training

The OAS risk management curriculum focuses on the key areas of avalanche education that directly pertain to companion rescue, personal protective equipment (PPE), avalanche hazards, terrain management, decision making, and team management for occupational and industrial employees that may be exposed to immediate danger to life and health (IDLH) avalanche risks. The OAS program will include a series of courses that follow the guidelines of A3 which will include both virtual, classroom, and field time in relation to each given course. The OAS program will be catered toward mountain occupational workers and is a tiered approach to operational and team decision making and skills. Travel in the field emphasizes terrain and avalanche hazard recognition with education and guidance to avoid risk exposure to avalanche terrain when possible.

An introduction to occupational avalanche hazard

Identify, assess, and take action to lower the risk of avalanche injuries in the workplace. The OAS Avalanche Awareness course provides an introduction to the hazards of traveling in or near avalanche terrain for all employees. This introductory course is limited to basic concepts of personal protective equipment (PPE), avalanche hazards, and companion rescue, but emphasizes managingrisk byunderstanding and avoiding exposure to avalanche terrain.

What You Will Learn

Observations

- Describe a basic and introductory process to manage risk for mountain winter avalanche conditions
-How to recognize and avoid obvious avalanche hazards. Understanding that proper preparation and training prior to outdoor field travel can save lives.

Hazards

Recognize avalanche exposure and differentiate avalanche terrain from terrain where avalanches can not occur

Resources

- Describe the PPE equipment necessary for winter mountain terrain travel
-Find and interpret local mountain weather forecast and avalanche advisory information and learn how to apply them for the days given objectives.
