The OAS Avalanche Level 1 course will spend 3 days teaching mountain occupational workers how to manage avalanche hazard. Participants will learn a repeatable process to manage their risk and the risk of their team while traveling into the field. Participants will also practice preparing for and carrying out a day of work in the field, keeping track of conditions, communicating, making decisions about hazards while traveling in the field, and learning rescue techniques if an avalanche occurs and someone is caught.
The OAS risk management curriculum focuses on the key areas of avalanche education that directly pertain to companion rescue, personal protective equipment (PPE), avalanche hazards, terrain management, decision making, and team management for occupational and industrial employees that may be exposed to immediate danger to life and health (IDLH) avalanche risks. The OAS program will include a series of courses that follow the guidelines of A3 which will include both virtual, classroom, and field time in relation to each given course. The OAS program will be catered toward mountain occupational workers and is a tiered approach to operational and team decision making and skills. Travel in the field emphasizes terrain and avalanche hazard recognition with education and guidance to avoid risk exposure to avalanche terrain when possible.
The OAS Level 1 Avalanche course is developed for any occupational worker who may find themselves on snow in winter in the mountains or snow covered terrain. It is important to develop the necessary skills needed to make good decisions while traveling through the these areas. In this course participants will learn about these proper travel techniques and terrain management, the basics about the formation and release of different avalanches, proper planning and preparation, group communication, and more.
