The OAS Avalanche Rescue course is developed for all winter mountain occupational workers and is intended to be retaken on a regular basis in order to keep abreast of the best practices in rescue techniques and gear. New participants will learn companion rescue, and returning students will expand their skills and knowledge with advanced topics and realistic scenario practice.

The OAS risk management curriculum focuses on the key areas of avalanche education that directly pertain to companion rescue, personal protective equipment (PPE), avalanche hazards, terrain management, decision making, and team management for occupational and industrial employees that may be exposed to immediate danger to life and health (IDLH) avalanche risks. The OAS program will include a series of courses that follow the guidelines of A3 which will include both virtual, classroom, and field time in relation to each given course. The OAS program will be catered toward mountain occupational workers and is a tiered approach to operational and team decision making and skills. Travel in the field emphasizes terrain and avalanche hazard recognition with education and guidance to avoid risk exposure to avalanche terrain when possible.

An introduction to occupational avalanche hazard

It is very important for all users, including occupational workers, to understand and to be able describe the importance of anticipating and knowing when you are entering into avalanche terrain. It is also important to understand that things can go wrong, and it is up to you and your team to be able to know how to react. In this 1-day field based course you will learn the most efficient way to execute an avalanche rescue, from scene size-ups to post-evacuation considerations, this course will teach you and your group, step by step, how to execute a companion rescue in the case of an avalanche.

8-hours all field based

Prerequisites

Understanding of basic avalanche awareness, it is recommended that participants have taken an Avalanche Awareness Course. Participants must have the required backcountry gear (beacon, shovel, probe, mode of travel), and familiarity of backcountry mode of travel.
